Wood: an all-important daily necessity for heating, cooking and illumination.








Wood was an all-important survival necessity; it was the only readily available cooking and heating fuel, and provided lighting after dark. With no electricity, the main room was, more or less, lighted by the fire burning in the huge fireplace.

Felling trees, hauling logs, chopping firewood, were important Autumn activities of which we were expected to do our part.

In the process of rearranging some logs prior to sawing, a log fell on my leg, incapacitating me until Spring.
