Sainte-Lizaigne
Sainte-Lizaigne, June 1940. Peaceful central France.

War followed us to this peaceful hamlet in Central France—la France Profonde—as Italy entered the war on the side of Germany and showed its mettle by bombing the local rail line and, of course, missing by a mile. The bombs made a crater which, for the next fifty years, became the delight of local waterfowl. A piece of shrapnel fell near the spot where the Moritz brothers were standing, watching the spectacle. We picked it up—it was red hot.
