Ernest and Alfred
Esch s/Alzette-Luxemburg
Ernst (6) and Alfred (8)

Ernst and I were delighted to be reunited when I returned to Esch in early 1939; I was enrolled at the local "Brill" Grammar School.

The teacher did not have kind feelings towards this Jewish foreigner and never missed an occasion to use the bow of his violin on my backside—a spectacle which the local kids found entertaining.

I never complained to my parents as I sensed, already at age 9, that they had more important problems.
